The second edition of 2011 EVERY ONE Race in Hawassa took place on Sunday 1 May 2011 promoting the EVERY ONE campaign and 50th anniversary of USAID working in Ethiopia.
A total of more than 3,000 participants took part in the event comprising three 21km races (men’s elite, women’s elite, non-elite), a 7km mass run and a 2km children’s run. Of these more than 200 participants came from Addis Ababa or abroad ensuring that Haile’s new 112-room hotel was full to bursting throughout race weekend.
Kiplimo Kimutai of Kenya broke the course record of 63:15 set by compatriot Wilson Chebet last year, winning the second edition of the EVERY ONE 21km convincingly by 44 seconds. The women’s race came down to a sprint finish and was won by Sisay Measo. Last year’s women’s winner finished 4th.
Haile Gebrselassie was present at the event, spoke at the pre-race media events, started the races and presented prizes to the winners. He was accompanied by Gebregziabiher Gebremariam, the reigning New York Marathon champion, Shiferaw Shigute, the President of the Southern Region and the Hawassa City Mayor. US Ambassador to Ethiopia Donald Booth and Adrian Lovett, EVERY ONE Global Director to part in the 7km and 21km races and presented prizes to winner.
The races are staged from Haile Resort hotel which serves as the race HQ for this event. Hawassa is situated 275 south of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. The altitude of Hawassa is 1700m. A part of the race course runs alongside Lake Hawassa which is a popular place for birdwatchers. Hawassa is the regional capital of southern Ethiopia. The inaugural edition of this event took place on 2 May 2010 with special guests hosted by Haile Gebrselassie including Paul Tergat of Kenya, Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia and New York Marathon Race Director Mary Wittenberg from USA. The event includes a half marathon competition both for the elite and for the non-elite; a 7km mass race; and 2km children's race. The winners of the elite race in 2010 were Wilson Chebet of Kenya in a time of 63 minutes and 13 seconds and Seada Kedir of Ethiopia in a time of 77minutes and 50 seconds |
